Common Use

Tasigna is used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in patients who are Philadelphia chromosome-positive. It works by blocking specific proteins (tyrosine kinases) that promote cancer cell growth.

Dosage and Direction

Take Tasigna exactly as prescribed, usually twice a day on an empty stomach. Swallow the capsules whole with water, at least two hours after eating and avoid food for at least one hour after taking the dose.

Precautions

Regular monitoring of heart rhythm, liver function, and blood counts is essential during treatment. Inform your doctor if you have heart conditions, low magnesium or potassium levels, or liver disease.

Contraindications

Do not use Tasigna if you have a known hypersensitivity to nilotinib. It is contraindicated in patients with long QT syndrome or those taking drugs known to prolong the QT interval.

Possible Side Effect

Common side effects include rash, headache, nausea, and fatigue. Serious risks involve heart rhythm disturbances (QT prolongation), liver toxicity, and low blood cell counts.

Drug Interaction

Avoid using Tasigna with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers, as they may alter drug levels. Grapefruit products should also be avoided due to interaction risks.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next dose at the scheduled time. Do not double up or take extra doses to compensate.

Overdose

Overdose symptoms may include severe nausea, vomiting, and abnormal heart rhythms. Immediate medical attention is required in such cases.

Storage

Store at room temperature in a dry place away from heat and direct light. Keep the medication in its original container and out of reach of children.
